Welcome to the Artemia Diaries!

I've recently picked up raising artemia (a.k.a brine shrimp or 'Sea Monkeys') and have created this mini-blog to document the trials, errors and successes.

July 19th, 2024

This evening I've prepared the aquarium with an all-in-one mix called 'Artemeasy' by mixing it with 1 litre of water to 21g of mixture.

I aerated (meaning I pumped oxygen in) the aquarium and whilst blending the mix with the water. I then placed it onto a heat mat and under a grow light.

July 20th, 2024

- The colony has hatched

- I fed them. UPDATE as of July 22nd, 2024: Don't feed them before they are 5 days old.

- Many of the shrimplets seem to be swimming to the top.

July 21th, 2024

- Added a light and a filter to the aquarium.

- There isn't much activity compared to yesterday. I think most of them are dead.

- I fed them. UPDATE as of July 22nd, 2024: Don't feed them before they are 5 days old.

July 22th, 2024

- I think most of the current colony is dead but I still can see a few swimming.

- The next feed is on July 27th.

July 23rd, 2024

- I can still see some swimming to the top.

July 24th, 2024

- It seems that more shrimplets have hatched.

- I have a good feeling about this colony and I hope I'm not wrong.

July 25th, 2024

- I have a feeling that the artemia like having the filter pumping oxygen into the water. They seem to be not to be going to the surface for air as much after the filter has pumper oxygen into the tank.

- Next feed is tomorrow...

July 25th, 2024

- Fed. Our next feed is August 1st

- The artemia are now large enough to see at a distance. They are so majestic and I love them so much.

July 28th, 2024

- There are SO MANY hatchlings in the aquarium. I have a good feeling for the future of this aquarium.

- They are all just so majestic to watch.

- There seems to be some marks from were the eggs hatched at the base of the aquarium.

July 31st, 2024

- I've noticed that at least 1 of the artemia are almost fully grown.

- Their next feed is tomorrow.

August 1st, 2024

- This evening I discovered some artemia hatched in an aquarium (The Magiquarium) I left alone nearly a month ago. I was surprised because they appeared to be days old.

- Both aquariums were fed. The next feed is on August 8th, 2024.

August 5th, 2024

- 2 of the artemia mated this afternoon. I was worried about turning on the filter in because I didn't want to disturb them but I did anyway.

August 8th, 2024

- Fed both tanks. Next feed: August 15th, 2024

August 9th, 2024

- More of the artemia have mated.

- This evening I plugged The Jar's filter into a smart plug and have set it to switch on for 5 minutes every 6 hours.

August 16th, 2024

- This evening I have set The Jar's filter to switch on for 3 minutes every 12 hours due to how powerful it is.

- Sexed both of the artemia in the Magiquarium. Both are female and will at some point be transferred into The Jar.

- Fed The Jar but left the Magiquarium due to uneaten food in the tank. Next feed: August 23rd, 2024

- More of the artemia have mated.

August 23rd, 2024

- I recently transferred the artemia from the Magiquarium to The Jar

- The Magiquarium is now a window algae farm because artemia love algae.

- Fed The Jar Next feed: August 30th, 2024

August 28th, 2024

- Today I noticed the artemia either congregating to a single corner or having the zoomies. This unusual behaviour made me worry but they turned out to be ok.

- Spotted more hatchlings in The Jar so the future is bright for this colony.

August 29th, 2024

- Most of the adult artemia are dead but there are still a few contented adults are alive and some hatchlings have hatched.

- There is some algae growing inside The Jar

- Fed The Jar Next feed: September 6th, 2024

August 30th, 2024

- The entire colony is dead. I'm not entirely sure but I have my suspicions of what contributed to their demise.

- This is disheartening and I may take a break.

- The algae farm is still running for a future colony.
